French Empire period antique mantel clock combines brass case with bronze adornment in meticulous detail. Classic Greek urn and simple lines of the clock case allow the embellishment to stand out, with embossed and hand-chased dial face that must be seen to be fully appreciated!
Such examples, rendered in solid bronze, have been copied over the years but the copies can never match the originals in sheer quality.
Fully operational, it features a pendulum movement, and a slow/fast adjustment key which fits in the tiny hole visible next to the numeral 12.

Mantel clock sets such as this pristine example reached their peak of popularity during the Beaux Artes period just before the dawn of the 20th century, and graced the mantels and buffets of the finest homes. This example, cast from spelter and given a labor-intensive patinaed bronze finish, was styled in the manner of Louis XVI, and features a playful cupid on the lookout for young lovers, hence the title by the sculptor, Amour aux Aguets. Francois Moreau, a member of the Moreau family that heavily influenced sculpture from this period all the way into the Art Deco era, was especially talented in creating the whimsical subjects based on mythology that were a trademark of the Moreau dynasty. Set upon lavishly veined marble bases, both the clock and urns are replete with wondrous detail from every angle. The urns still boast their brass inserts used when fresh flowers were displayed! The clock retains all its original parts and can be made functional by request, and boasts a hand-painted, vividly colored porcelain dial face.
